Description
"Stressed Out at Work? The Connection Between Stress Relief and Gardening"
Presented by: Don Cisler, Head Horticulturist at West of the Lake Gardens
Don will be presenting about the health benefits of something he knows a lot about...gardening! Don will be telling us about how gardening changed his life, as well as the life of Ruth West, Founder of West of the Lake Gardens. Ruth relocated here with her husband, John West, due to John's job. Not knowing anyone in the area, Ruth was somewhat lonely, and found peace and serenity in her gardens; little did she know at the time that she would become a self-taught horticulturist on her way to creating a garden, and a reputation, known throughout the Midwest! Learn how you, too, can use gardening as a way to unwind from work and a busy, stressful schedule. It will make you a better employee, more efficient, and able to clear your mind.
At eighteen, Don started his working career at a local factory, Imperial Eastman Corporation, now known as Parker Hannifin Corporation. He worked his way up to earn a position as a machinist trainee. He spent the next twenty-three years there working as a machinist. At age forty, and maybe facing a mid-life crisis, he needed a change. In the spring of 1997, he answered an ad listed in the Herald Times Reporter for a gardener / mechanic position at a six acre estate. That six acre estate turned out to be the beautiful West of the Lake Gardens.
He received the position and after two years was encouraged to return to school. He was informed that beginning in the fall of 2000 Northeast Wisconsin Technical College would be offering a new program in Landscape Horticulture. With the support of the West Foundation, which owns and operates the West of the Lake Gardens, he enrolled and was the first student accepted into this new program. He graduated as ‘Student of the Year’ in the Landscape Horticulture Technician Program in 2003. In July of 2003 he was rewarded for his efforts by being promoted to the position of Head Gardener / Horticulturist at West of the Lake Gardens.
He is entering his seventeenth season at West of the Lake. It’s been a fun ride and a story he loves to share.
**Please note, a box lunch will be given at the conclusion of the presentation, as no food or drink is permitted on the grounds of West of the Lake Gardens.**
