The Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, is offering a variety of workshops and activities as part of Father's Day weekend. On Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14 all fathers and father-figures receive free general admission. The Museum and Pinecrest Village is open from 10 am to 4 pm each day.
Various workshops will be held throughout the day on Saturday, June 14. Times and fees vary by workshop and advanced registration is required. Workshops include:
Family Base Ball Workshop: (10 am to Noon) Learn how to make a hand-made leather baseball. An adult and child pair will work together to cut out, stitch, and craft their own leather baseball to use for play.
Beer and Pretzels: (9 am to 1 pm) Learn about the historical role of beer and discover how to make a pale ale using local ingredients sourced from Briess Malting in Manitowoc with the Manty Malters Homebrew Club. You’ll also make a savory treat - oven pretzels. Must by 21 years or older.
Items for the Home Blacksmithing: (Noon to 3 pm) Students will have the opportunity to make one of the following projects to enjoy: dinner triangle, candleholders, lantern/plant hooks, or fire pit poker.
An 1860s base ball match will also be held on Saturday, June 14. The Museum’s vintage base ball team, The Manitowoc County Amateurs, unpack their uniforms, brown balls, and double-knobbed bats to play in a 19th-century base ball game. They are carrying on a long tradition of base ball (as it was spelled in the 19th century) in Wisconsin. The Museum and Village is filled with all the ambiance of play in the 1860s—no gloves or other protective equipment, wooden bats and scoreboard, and top-hatted umpires.
Join the fun by participating in a rousing pick-up game. Guests will get to field and hit with the team and learn how to play base ball by the rules of 1860s:
- 12:15 pm- Play a family pick up game and learn the rules of 1860s ball
- 1 pm- Manitowoc County Amateurs vs You, our visitors! (all ages and abilities are invited to join us to play)
General admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $10 for children age 4 to 17, and free for children under age 4 and MCHS Members. For more information about this and other programs, visit the Historical Society's website at ManitowocCountyHistory.org or call (920) 684-4445.
