Best Gift Ever Book Drive @ Manitowoc Public Library
Monday, November 4, through Friday, December 6
Help build a lifetime of reading enjoyment by giving the gift of reading! Manitowoc Public Library is running our "Best Gift Ever" campaign to collect new children's books for local families in need. From November 4 through December 6, you can donate new, unwrapped books by placing them in the donation box near the First Floor Service Desk. All book donations will be distributed locally to kids in need. All books are welcome - picture books, board books, chapter books, young adult books, anything you feel a child or teenager would enjoy reading! You can also make a monetary donation that will go towards purchasing new children's books to be donated. For checks please make it to the "Friends of the Manitowoc Public Library," with "Best Gift Ever" in the notes line. Make sure monetary donations are submitted by November 25, so we can have the books ready for delivery in December. Owning something as simple as a book can have a tremendous impact on a child’s self-esteem and help boost their spirits. We ask that you work with us to provide new children’s books to these needy kids. The benefits will last a lifetime.

Movie Nights at the Library/Avatar: The Way of Water      Thursday, November 14, 4-7:30 PM
If you head to Manitowoc Public Library on Thursday, November 14, you won’t just be heading to a storehouse of knowledge—you’ll be entering an interstellar vessel capable of transporting you to the Alpha Centauri star system. Specifically to Pandora, the lush, habitable moon that is home to both the Na’vi—an indigenous, blue humanoid species—and unobtainium—the precious superconductive mineral that has led to the colonization and mining of Pandora. If you’re in the mood for some epic science-fiction entertainment, then you should join MPL’s Matt Mottl from 4-7:30 PM on Thursday, November 14, in MPL’s Balkansky Community Room for a screening of “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022, PG-13, 3 hours, 12 minutes), during “Movie Nights at the Library.” Admission is FREE!!! See you in the Balkansky!

MPL Insider: Beyond the Books with Tim & Emily                     Thursday, November 21, 12 PM
For their last installment of 2024, Tim & Emily have cobbled together a Blockbuster Episode of “MPL Insider: Beyond the Books” on Thursday, November 21, at 12 PM! It’s the kind of holiday season lineup that all-but-requires the viewer to heat up a Swanson “Hungry Man” Roast Turkey TV Dinner, grab a Snapple Peach Iced Tea or two, and settle in for some fun, nonlinear chit-chat! Not only will MPL’s Tony Plekan and Lisa Gottshall be on-hand to discuss the “Best Gift Ever Book Drive,” not only will the Gleam Team of Barb Bundy-Jost and Jordan Kabat be in-studio to chat about all things Evergleam, but Tim & Emily are also throwing a Lisa-Palooza—with not one, not two, but ALL FOUR MPL LISAS convened to talk about the many, many tasks they undertake on a daily basis at the Library! Come with questions at-the-ready! You're bound to have some!

Teen Hang-Out: Shelf Conscious Book Group                         Thursday, November 21, 6-7 PM
Don't like book clubs? Me either! Don't want someone telling you what to read? Same! There's no reading list for the Shelf Conscious Book Group, meeting in Manitowoc Public Library’s Franklin Street Room on Thursday, November 21, from 6-7 PM. Come talk about the books you loved, hated, or haven't read yet, but want to. Or the ways the adapted series based on the book you liked failed you. There will be new books to look over and a Genre of the Month to consider. Snacks and conversation starters provided; ideas you have to bring yourself.
