Roncalli High School students to stage production of ‘Hello, Dolly!’
MANITOWOC, Wis. — Students from Roncalli High School are set to stage a performance of “Hello, Dolly!” Nov. 14-17.
“Hello, Dolly!” with book by Michael Stewart, and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, is a musical adaptation based on the play, “The Matchmaker” by Thorton Wilder. The original production was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion. It was produced for the Broadway stage by David Merrick and Champion Five, Inc.
“We are thrilled to bring ‘Hello, Dolly!’ to the stage at Roncalli High School for this year’s fall musical,” said Tim Olson, director. “This is a show that allows for a number of students to showcase their talents and give theater a try. It is humorous, romantic, entertaining and includes well-known songs from musical theater history.”
The story of “Hello, Dolly!” centers on the “exploits of Dolly Gallagher Levi, turn-of-the-century matchmaker and ‘woman who arranges things,’” according to Concord Theatricals. The show premiered on Broadway in January 1964 with Carol Channing in the title role. Bette Midler is the latest actress to star as Dolly Levi on Broadway as the show has been revived numerous times. “Hello, Dolly!” won 10 Tony Awards in 1964, including Best Musical, Author and Composer/Lyricist, along with additional accolades including the Drama Critics Circle Award, Outer Critics Circle Awards, and Drama Desk Awards over the years.
Roncalli High School will present “Hello, Dolly!” Nov. 14-16 at 7 p.m., and at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Zimmer Auditorium located in the Fine Arts Center at Roncalli High School, 2000 Mirro Drive, Manitowoc.
